Awareness of the inner body has benefits in the physical realm. One of them is a significant slowing of the aging of the physical body. Whereas the outer body normally appears to grow old and wither fairly quickly, the inner body does not change with time, except that you may feel it more deeply and become it more fully. If you are 20-years-old now, the energy field of your inner body will feel just the same when you are 80. It will be just as vibrantly alive.

As soon as your habitual state changes from being out of the body and trapped in your mind to being in the body and present in the Now, your physical body will feel lighter, clearer, more alive. As there is more consciousness in the body, its molecular structure actually becomes less dense.

When you become identified more with the timeless inner body than with the outer body and when presence becomes your normal mode of consciousness and past and future no longer dominate your attention, you do not accumulate time anymore in your psyche and in the cells of the body. The accumulation of time as the psychological burden of past and future greatly impairs the cells’ capacity for self-renewal. So if you inhabit the inner body, the outer body will grow old at a much slower rate, and even when it does, your timeless essence will shine through the outer form and you will not give the appearance of an old person.

Another benefit of this practice is a great strengthening of the immune system. The more consciousness you bring into the body, the stronger the immune system becomes. It is as if every cell awakens and rejoices. The body loves your attention. It is also a potent form of self-healing. Most illnesses creep in when you are not present in the body. If the master is not present in the house, all kinds of shady characters will take up residence there. When you inhabit your body, it will be hard for unwanted guests to enter.

Not only your physical immune system becomes strengthened; your psychic immune system is greatly enhanced as well. The latter protects you from the negative mental-emotional force fields of others, which are highly contagious. Inhabiting the body protects you by raising the frequency vibration of your total energy field, so that anything that vibrates at a lower frequency – fear, anger, depression – now exists in what is virtually a different order of reality.

There is a simple but powerful self-healing meditation you can do whenever you feel the need to boost your immune system. It is particularly effective when you feel the first symptoms of an illness, but it also works with entrenched illnesses if you use it at frequent intervals and with an intense focus. However, it is not a substitute for the moment-to-moment practice of being in the body; otherwise, its effect will only be temporary.

Here it is. When you are unoccupied for a few minutes, especially last thing at night before falling asleep and first thing in the morning before getting up, “flood” your body with consciousness. Close your eyes. Lie flat on your back. Choose different parts of your body to focus your attention on briefly at first: hands, feet, arms, legs, abdomen, chest, head, and so on. Feel the life energy inside those parts as intensely as you can. Stay with each part for 15 seconds or so. Then let your attention run through the body like a wave a few times, from feet to head and back again. This need only take a minute or so. After that, feel the inner body in its totality, as a single field of energy. Hold that feeling for a few minutes. Be intensely present during that time in every cell of your body. Don’t be concerned if the mind occasionally succeeds in drawing your attention out of the body and you lose yourself in some thought. As soon as you notice that this has happened, just return your attention to the inner body.

Hello Guru! The path of darshan!

Tonight I am watching Fierce Grace for the first time. WOW! It is a timely watch for me. For the previous six months I have been enduring an ailment called "labyrinthitis," a malady of the inner ear that has greatly affected my sense of balance, etc., as well as bringing about vertigo, dizziness and naseau. Over the last two weeks, it appears to finallly be lifted from me. Although I am sure it does not compare with the debilitating affects of a stroke, I can now empathize to some degree with others who suddenly are separated from experiencing life in its fullness. Of course, what has truly happened is that this ailment has drawn me further and deeper into the fullness of life. And itt has proven to be a gift that has helped me appreciate my life more.....and.....empathize with others lives and experiences of dramatic changes in health. While growing up, I can point to certain experiences that helped me become aware of SPIRIT! It was from Ram Dass's writings and words that I became aware that I am, I was and would always be, on a spiritual path. I just had to claim it....live it consciously with my own heart and spirit....and discover ...eventually......that I am on God's spiritual path.....one that leads to me, to you and to wherever God's love and imagination may want to take us. Everything IS BEING HERE NOW!!! At the feet of my Guru, the path of darshan is eternal.

New Tribe - SF Bay Area Buddhism and Meditation

Hey Folks,

I have started a tribe called "SF Bay Area Buddhism and Meditation". When wanting to post about NoCal-specific Buddhist events, I noticed that there was a gap beteen the "SF Yoga" tribe, on the one hand, and all the location non-specific Buddhist and meditation tribes on the other.

The blurb I wrote for the tribe description says, "A tribe for discussion of the deep Buddhist and meditation scene in the San Francisco Bay Area. Feel free to post or ask about a teacher or center, to announce upcoming events, to ask for rides and sitting partners, etc. Posting about Bay Area-specific topics of interest to Buddhist oriented people (i.e. things happening with Transpersonal Psychology, Hinduism and Taoism, yoga and martial arts, Eckhart Tolle and Rumi, that sort of thing) welcome also, but a main focus on Buddhism and on Buddhist practice is the intention. ¡Vive le Buddhisme et le trésor triple!"

First, thank you, Aric, for creating this tribe and accepting my membership request.
I probably belong to the tail end of the first generation of Ram Dass devotees. I first learned about him from two books an older sibling left at home and forgot after her first year of college in the early 70s. The first one was The Psychedelic Experience co-authored by Richard Alpert (aka: Ram Dass), Ralph Metzner and Timothy Leary. One quick remark, once you get past the "drug" aspect of this book and investigate the Tibetan Bardo meditation contained in its pages, you are left with an incredible invitation to the spiritual path. The second book I "adopted" was Be Here Now. If anyone from my generation were to describe this book it would have to be as a manual. And if you know anything about the Lama Foundation, it is about cultivating a grass roots spirituality that is about relationship, love and seeing the divine in all things. That's how I saw it anyway. Ram Dass presented me an alternative way of life that I treasure immeasurably.

Our paths finally intersected in the late 1980s at the Unity Temple on the Plaza in Kansas City, Missouri. I have posted a small picture of the sanctuary in the Be Here Now gallery. It looks just the same. Ram Dass sat center stage with lots of beautiful flowers on each side as well as some sweet incense burning. I will describe probably describe it more at some other time but I just want to leave you the impression that when you went to hear Ram Dass speak, it was as if time and space were suspended. Outside the doors of the Temple, all the world of Maya was dissolved away. I felt like I was in perfect alignment, perfect harmony, with all that is sacred. And even though there were at least a couple of hundred other people sitting in the audience, I felt like he was having this personal conversation with just me. After he finished his talk and gave us all a blessing, many people, including myself, formed a line to have darshan with Ram Dass. A lot of people brought books for him to autograph, I heard some people share problems going on in their lives, and others pouring on the flowery compliments. But when it was my turn, my mind just went totally blank. A beautiful spirit of love came over me. Ram Dass took my hands into his and we just gazed into each others eyes. It was just for a couple of minutes but it was given to me so as to last a life time. Before letting go of each other, he said, "you have such a gentle spirit," and a few other kind words of affirmation I can't remember right now. All I can say is that in those brief moments, as I was gazing into his eyes, I was also gazing into the eyes of Neem Karoli Baba and all of the beloved with whom we share this spiritual path through all time and space.

Please, I encourage others to share their encounters with Ram Dass.
