Re: who introduced you to Ram Dass?
Thu, March 4, 2004 - 5:33 PM
My wonderful friend Eagle, who is one of the biggest Ram Dass fans I know! I am forever indebted to him. He told me about "Be Here Now" months before I bought the book, but as life is, it found its way into my hands at the perfect time! Almost every time I read any part of the book I cry major tears of release. Thank you my dear friend Eagle. Namaste. -

Re: who introduced you to Ram Dass?
Sat, March 6, 2004 - 12:41 PMIn 1991, a wonder-woman named Doriandra invited me to her home and loaned me a copy of BE HERE NOW - seriously changed my view on how life could be lived. And then came the teachings and lectures on cassette tapes - Ram Dass just seemed to hit the nail on the head with every word he uttered...
I trust most people reading have seen the documentary FIERCE GRACE - also a stellar chronicle of this man and his contributions, achievements and spirit.

Alan Watts' writings turned me on to Ram Dass. -

RAM DASS: FIERCE GRACE -- movie review
Wed, March 17, 2004 - 4:18 PMRAM DASS: FIERCE GRACE -- movie review
The movie is awesome if you come from a spiritual understanding of the topic matter. Ram Dass's excursions into LSD with Leary are covered, as are the early days at Oxford and Ram Dass's excursions to India where he meets his main guru. Current footage is of Ram Dass coping with his stroke on a daily basis.
There are two scenes that will really get your attention -- one couple reads a personal letter from Ram Dass which conveys his sympathies and offers spiritual guidance after their daughter is abducted (murdered and never found, I believe), and a girl talks to Ram Dass about her boyfriend who was murdered in a foreign country and Ram Dass helps her to understand his death.
Ram Dass's directness and understanding of life/death in the simplest terms is poetic and graceful.
My girlfriend, who does not practice a belief system, seemed bored by the movie. I thought it was purely inspiring. This movie may awaken the Boddhisatva within you.
I recommend seeing this if you follow an Eastern belief system, or if you are having trouble coping with someone's death. -

Re: RAM DASS: FIERCE GRACE -- movie review
Wed, March 17, 2004 - 4:21 PMBy the way, catch Joseph Campbell's documentaries if you can find them -- they are simply awesome.
I also recommend reading anything from Rudi (aka, Swami Rudrananda) if you like the direct simplicity, grace, and everyday practicality of Ram Dass's teachings.

Re: who introduced you to Ram Dass?
Sun, March 14, 2004 - 12:34 PM1997 was the year for me, my friend Paul Haden brought out Be Here Now, about 2 hours after digesting some blue-stem golden caps. I was amazed at what I saw before me, the intelligence, the peace and the beauty that spoke to me, I was awe struck and will never forget it(especially sence I now own it)- I look forward to hearing the man himself speak this May at the ASSA!

Re: who introduced you to Ram Dass?
Wed, September 15, 2004 - 4:10 PMThis posting was originally intended to get people to talk about the manner in which they found BE HERE NOW, or any other avenue that Ram Dass has provided...
I'm lucky enough to say that I have actually been introduced to Ram Dass in person, largely through Miss Liz and her hot tip about his appearance at the ASSA conference - Thanks a Billion!!
I told him about our Tribe here - he smiled and gave blessings... =-> -

Re: who introduced you to Ram Dass?
Wed, September 15, 2004 - 5:35 PMI started reading Be Here Now off of my father's library. I was on a silence/fasting retreat and found may insights for all the ramblings and roundabouts of a 15year old's mind. My mind opened and I could sit in peace. I was graced to here him speak at a lecture last year with Sai Ma and Sat Santokh. Again an opportunity to sit in calmness, letting worries fly by. For my father's 55th birhtday I gave him Fierce Grace. Full circle......

Re: who introduced you to Ram Dass?
Thu, September 16, 2004 - 7:53 PMIn Fall of 1990, I had just finished taking an "Introduction to Buddhism" class at UC Santa Cruz. After class ended, my friend told me about some students getting together at a house out in Soquel to watch a video by this guy Ram Dass. I had other shit to do, but rolled the dice and tagged along with my friend and his GF for the afternoon on a foggy cold day.
The video blew my mind. It was of RD giving a guest lecture at a UCSC religious studies class. He started with about five minutes of silence, just making eye contact and being with people. I could not fathom how long he was doing that for, and how comfortable and open he looked.
One other thing that I remember was Ram Dass saying, "we weren't born into these meat suits with an operating manual. We're always learning by trail-and-error, pull on this lever and see what that does, push that button and see what that does." It was if he knew my experience of being alive more than I did.
Then I bought "Be Here Now", and didn't care much for it. And then I bought "Journey of Awakening", and have read it a hundred times since and given copies away to fifty friends. And I've enjoyed some of his audio tapes even more.
Thanks for asking,
Adam -

Re: who introduced you to Ram Dass?
Fri, September 17, 2004 - 10:30 AMHi All:
On my 16th. birthday (celebrated in Mexico) I was given a copy of "the only dance there is" by my parents as a gift.
The first time I read the book everything resonated with me. I searched for copies of "Be Here Now" since that time, about 11 years later I found a very, very old version of it in a small used book store!! -
